McRoskey Mattress Co. – How Their Mattresses Differ from Those at Urban Sleep Store?

In the second article in this series we are going to compare the mattresses of McRoskey Mattress Co. to those found at Urban Sleep Store. This series of articles are written in an effort to remain as transparent as possible to our readers as we compare specialty mattresses in stores throughout San Jose and the surrounding Bay Area to those at Urban Sleep Store. To ensure the consistency of our comparison we use 5 of the most important topics to our demographic. These are…
- What Mattress brands are carried
- The Price range of the mattresses carried
- Organic certifications
- Where is the mattress manufactured or produced
- What guarantees come with the mattress
Since our demographic is looking for specialty mattresses, primarily organic mattresses and organic latex mattresses, this will be the underlying focus of our comparison. This article, as well as all the others you’ll find in this series, are not intended to bash or skew the view of the mattresses made by the McRoskey Mattress Co. or any other competitor. We are simply allowing our readers and potential customers the opportunity to compare mattress stores in San Jose and the surrounding Bay Area to Urban Sleep Store (in the comfort of their home) so they can best decide where to initiate shopping for their organic mattress. So let’s begin.
Taking a Closer look at the McRoskey Mattress Co.
Brands Carried by the McRoskey Mattress Co.
The McRoskey Mattress Co. carries their own mattress brand. They have 3 lines which are called McRoskey Classic, McRoskey byDesign and McRoskey Basic. All mattresses made by the McRoskey Mattress Co. are innerspring mattresses. The main difference between these mattresses is what surrounds the inner-springs and how many layers of cotton or polyester are in the mattress. In the classic, for example, the mattress springs are surrounded by “natural” wool and latex.
All beds from McRoskey Mattress Co. are almost 100% handcrafted and made to order. The mattresses consist of, what they call, a “true box-spring” which is a wood frame with inner-springs to provide maximum support. They interlace an inner spring unit for the mattress itself and once the mattress is constructed they walk up and down your mattress (covered by a sheet for protection) as “a way to even out the filling material and compress the mattress overall”. The McRoskey Mattress Co. has been in business since 1899 and they are manufacturing mattresses the same way they did when they started.
In comparison to three lines from McRoskey Mattress Co., Urban Sleep Store carries 5 lines. Moreover, each of the 5 lines have their own family or collection of mattresses. The type of specialty mattresses we carry vary in style and material to achieve a well rounded selection. This includes everything from certified organic mattresses to TEMPUR-pedic mattresses (the most recommended mattress in the U.S.). Since mattresses are not a “one style fits all” product, the various brands and styles we carry ensure that you’ll find a mattress that fits you best.
Price Range of Mattresses
Beds from McRoskey Mattress Co. range in price from $875 (McRoskey’s Basic – mattress only, Twin) to $7850 (McRoskey’s byDesign – Cal king set). Urban Sleep Store on the other hand has a Greenspring innerspring mattress by Natura starting at $899 (mattress only, Queen) and our top of line mattress is $9999 (king mattress only).
It’s important to remember that top of line mattress at McRoskey Mattress Co. is an innerspring mattress with multiple layers of cotton and polyester while Urban Sleep Store top of line mattress is made from the finest 100% certified organic cotton and wool with individual latex layers wrapped in organic cotton. These individual layers allow you to truly customize your sleep experience exactly to your liking and enables couples to choose their own custom sleep surface without compromising the others needs. Both of the top of line mattresses are close in price but the mattress offered by Urban Sleep Store far exceeds the McRoskey byDesign mattress in both quality of materials as well design.
Does McRoskey Mattress Co. Carry Certified Organic Mattresses?
Unfortunately the McRoskey Mattress Co. does not carry any organic mattresses. They’ve been making the same quality mattress for over 100 years but, in our opinion, they haven’t stayed up with the sleep technology and organic materials available to the industry today. Although we also carry non-organic mattresses as well we are definitely considered by many to THE destination for environmentally and health conscious consumers to learn about and purchase organic mattresses in San Jose and the surrounding Bay Area.
The organic mattress line carried by Urban Sleep Store goes through 3 levels of organic certification. The first level is the raw materials. They are all certified organic from nationally recognized third party certification groups. Furthermore, all raw materials come from right here in the U.S. (Texas and California). The second level of organic certification is the manufacturing of the mattress. Our organic mattress line is manufactured in northern California in the first certified organic mattress factory. This ensures that organic materials avoid cross contamination with chemicals used in factories that manufacture non-organic mattresses. Finally, the third level of certification is the completed product to ensure they have met the certifying organizations standards (such as GREENGUARD Environmental Group).

In addition, here are all the organic mattress certifications held by OMI for their organicpedic mattresses. Once you click on the link to view the certification, click the expand button in the upper right hand corner for a larger view.
While the McRoskey Mattress Co. does strive to make great mattresses for their consumers and they have over 100 years of experience doing so, they just can’t compare the purity of the organic mattresses carried by Urban Sleep Store.
Where are McRoskey’s Mattresses Manufactured?
The McRosky Mattress Co. started in San Francisco back in 1899. Although they are not organic, their mattresses have been “lovingly handcrafted in San Francisco and shipped all over the world” for well over 100 years. If carbon footprints are an area of concern for you (and it is for a lot of our customers) then you will be happy to know that if you live in the San Francisco Bay area the carbon footprint left to deliver your mattress from McRoskey will be low.
Likewise for Urban Sleep Store. Their organic mattress manufacturer is located in Northern California and Urban Sleep Store is in the Bay Area. So not only is the carbon footprint low but all the materials, manufacturing and finished product are all certified organic.
What Type of Guarantee Does McRoskey Mattress Co. Have?
Always an area for concern. They say it takes at least thirty days to determine the satisfaction level of your new mattress because you can never be sure if you are going to like the mattress until after you’ve actually slept on it for some time. Since mattress retailers cannot resell a used mattress you’re usually provided with a comfort guarantee that states if you are not satisfied you have “30,60 or 90 days” to come in and exchange it for something that you think will work better.
McRoskey’s return policy is 30 days. If your not happy with your mattress return it within 30 days of the date on the receipt and McRoskey Mattress Co. will allow you to exchange it for another “standard” size mattress. Only one exchange is allowed.
Urban Sleep Store on the other hands offers a 90 day comfort guarantee. This means that if for any reason you are unhappy with your new mattress you can bring it back within 90 days of purchasing it and exchange it for one you feel will work better. This gives you much more time to determine weather or not you chose the right mattress.
Keep in mind, Urban Sleep Store has the largest selection of organic mattress in the Bay Area and the sales staff at Urban Sleep Store are experts in mattress technology and materials. They take the time to ask the right questions about your current sleep environment and sleep habits which ensures a very high success rate of happy customers and a very low rate of returns.
So there you have it. 5 factors of comparison between Urban Sleep Store and the McRoskey Mattress Co., both located in the Bay Area. Hope this helps you decide where you want to start shopping for your new specialty or organic mattresses. Whether you choose Urban Sleep Store or McRoskey Mattress Co., we hope we’ve provided some information that saved you time.
